Homeward Bound

Finally looks like the weather is cooling down in our “home” area, so we are planning on heading that way.  We did not plan to be gone very long and sort of left most every thing open to the elements, so we are not sure what we will be getting back to.  Might be kind of interesting.

Yesterday I played golf for the first time in over three years or more.  Surprisingly I was pleased that I did as well as I did.  There were some bad shots, but overall it was good.  I was forced to quite back then due to my arms that actually stopped working, it got so bad that I had to have help getting dressed.  Doctors were unable to find a cause, but eventually it slowly got better.  Getting old is truly not for sissies.

Some of our hometown friends were passing through the area and we got to spend some time with them the other day.  We were like two ships passing in the night.  They have been on a four month RV trip to the east coast.  Great seeing them even if it was a short visit.

So here we go, leaving the base we spotted this doe and her twin fawns.  They couldn’t have cared less.  The deer population is really growing, they are every where.

COOLING OUR WHEELS

Last Sunday we made a run for the coast from central California, just north of Sacramento.  The weather had turned unbearably hot, touching on 110 at times.  We had planned on getting a very early start as to be well on our way and possibly make it to the coastal area before the heat set in.  Up at five, ready to roll at six, and Murphy’s law kicked in, one of the jacks would raise.  Luckily Chuck took a look and seen that a bolt had broken off, and yes, it is Sunday.  Made a dash to Wally World and got some aluminum bolts, which did work, although it took a few to finish the job.  On the road by eight though.  And about half way here we had cloud cover that kept the temps down.  Did have a brief stretch where the temperature was climbing pretty fast, but about thirty miles from here it dropped from 107 to 66. Looks like we will be here for a few weeks, just south of Pismo Beach at Vandenberg AFB. There is a big fire burning near Jojoba Hills, don’t think the resort is in danger at this time.  Glad we are out of there though.

We have some friends here in the area, and have met a few people in the campground.  Chuck has golfing partners and come Sunday I’m planning on playing with a group.  Been so long, hope I don’t whiff the the ball, that is so embarrassing.  Today we took in the movie, Hope Springs, which was quite good.  Great acting by Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones.

Also celebrated my birthday this week, Chuck cooked a wonderful lobster dinner, and did a very good job, especially considering that his specialty is breakfast or hot dogs.

Till next time, travel safe.

NOT ALL RV’S NEED WHEELS

For years I spent every summer up on this lake, and totally loved it.  There were even a few summers that I never came back to town.  Would make a grocery run but that would be it.  Had not been back since we sold our houseboat, and always had that little doubt that we might not have done the right thing.  As much as I enjoyed the visit, it put my mind at rest on that question.  It was time to move on to other things.  Going back for a visit though is still special.  Thank you friends for inviting me.  Chuck did not wish to join us, it was more ladies time, plus he got to golf for three days. Another reason we sold, he was definitely ready back then.

One special way to relax, played several new card games, also tried sequence,(loved it) and actually read three pages of a book.  Several times, hard to keep my mind on reading.

Had this duck swimming around us with a top knot, didn’t look like a growth, just a like a ball of fur.  Nick name “Mohawk”.

The weather here has gotten sooo hot, we are going to make a run for the coast tomorrow.  Plan on leaving real early, maybe we can get there before it get too hot.  Today it hot 107, BUT IT IS A DRY HEAT!!!!  But then so is an oven.  Glad we have 50 amps, we are fairly comfortable.

Our grandson, taken at his bowling tournament.  Took him and a friend yesterday to the Sky Zone, which is a mega trampoline establishment. They have foam pits, and play dodge ball or just jump.  Spent 2 hours there and they were wore out.  Had a great time though, just the boys, we stayed on the side lines. Believe me this not for the older generation.  That catches me up to date, enjoyed seeing our friends that are still here, but so looking forward to the cool weather at the coast.  The moose lodge, are having a lulu, and they have a huge pit near us in which they cooked two pigs and 5 turkeys over night.  Sure felt sorry for them today as they were uncovering the pit.  Shoveling that dirt and all, good thing the beer was flowing freely.  Would have liked to have gone but the price was a little steep at 35 dollars a person.  So instead we went out with friends, great time, home early, rest fast and hit the road.

You Can Go Home Again

But it is no longer home! And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So far the time in the Sacramento valley has not been that hot.  I was very leery of coming here this time of year, so hopefully it will hold for a while longer.  Chuck is getting his golf fix, sort of.  He pulled a muscle and his side is giving him fits when he plays.  Seen a few friends, and I must say, they are aging fast.  Now they are probably saying the same about us!  We have our jacks down at the Moose lodge in Yuba City.  Have 50 amps and water only, but it is all of 70 dollars a week, so can complain there.  Plus they cook most nights.  And this is where my ole bridge club meets twice a week.  Got to play today, it was fun to see everyone, although the club has gotten quite a bit smaller.

Going to spend a few days with some girls friends on a house boat, starting tomorrow. So looking forward to that, spent many a summer living on one one and loved it.  Our grandson has talked us into taking him and a friend on a adventure, so we will be doing that after I’m back.  He suggested that washing and waxing the 5’er and truck might help his cause, so we quickly agreed. Then we may be heading out. Not sure where to. Had planned on staying a bit longer, Chuck was trying to get installed into the Elks club, and it was almost set up to take place next week.  But today he found out that the guy who was getting it done ASAP……died.  How it will work out now, we don’t know.

Travel safe, travel easy.

LOOKING FOR THE OTTERS

We headed out this morning, picked up our friends, and we off to the Rock.  Hoping to see some otters.  Our son and DIL stopped here on the way home and were telling us about a mother and baby otter they seen and how much they enjoyed it.  No DSC03428such luck for us.  Did see a few but at a distance. These gulls were looking for a free meal.DSC03378

The birds were in full view though.

DSC03453

We set off for Paso Robles, where years ago we would always stop at the neatest caboose that served the best hamburgers ever.  It was still there, but, now it had been turned into part of a mini food court.  Hamburgers were still good, onion rings wonderful.  Just no caboose.  And the temperature……we left here, 60 degrees, drove 30 miles inland, 99 degrees.  Sure felt good to get back to the RV.

DSC03460

Had to post this picture, there is a story behind it from the very distant past.  Way to long to go into here.

One more day here, and then we move to the central Sacramento valley.  Still not looking forward to the heat, anxious to see our friends, so it is worth it.

Morro Bay

A nice uneventful drive of 80 miles.  We actually had more trouble finding the campground once we were on this very small National Guard outpost.  It is not the best of campground, actually I would rate it rather low.  There are only about 14 sites, but FHU’s and for the tourist area it is in, very reasonable.  After we seen the other parks in the area, ours went up rather fast.  We have room between our rigs!

A friend of ours had moved to this area, and remarried, so we were looking forward to meeting his new wife and getting to see him again.  We met the first night at the Apple Farm in San Luis Obispo. Great time, stayed till we felt that we had worn out our welcome and then some, but the restaurant was not busy so didn’t feel too bad.  The best part, we felt like we had know his wife forever.

pismo 086

The flowers were amazing, you know they are my downfall.

Leaving there we took a drive to the beach, had to see the “Rock”.

Shooting into the sun, kind of hard to get a good picture.  The birds were all over the rock.

Several types of birds nest on Morro Rock, including three cormorant species and two gull species.

It presently serves as a reserve for peregrine falcons, which are locally endangered and cause most of the laws that prohibit intervention with avian life.

If you click on the pic, you can see the birds, there also is some other evidence visible. Luckily they were not in the flying mode while we were walking around.

The last few days we have been trading dinners.  Been a long time since I’ve cooked a whole meal, get kind of used to doing the potluck routine.  Today started out with us doing laundry and then Chuck met Bill for a round of golf.  Me, I just vegged, tomorrow think we will do the beach thing again. Love’n the cool weather here on the coast, high fog early but it usually is gone by nine or ten.

Well, that catches me up for a while, life is good.

WHEELS A’ROLLING

Don’t know about anyone else but after we have sat for awhile getting back into the pre-routine of moving is some what nerve racking.  We left Jojoba heading for Chula Vista Elks, following one of our neighbors.  Easy drive, lots of traffic.  Great campground, although it is just a large parking lot.  They also have a partially enclosed clubhouse, with tables, chairs, big screen TV, bbq.  Very nice set up for a small group of no more than 12 to 15 couples.  Everyone was very welcoming and we had a nice time. Seemed we were mostly planning what to eat, where to eat, or complaining that we couldn’t eat another bite.  The first night we were only three couples so we did a small potluck, and our neighbor gourmet chef fixed a wonderful salad of heirloom tomatoes, gorgonzola and red onions with white balsamic vinegar dressing. OMG, it was so good!

While we were in the area we took a run out to the Naval Air Station to check on the possibility of flying from there.  Very small, but we will see when the time gets closer.  Going over to Coronado Island was awesome, pictures didn’t really turn out all that good.

pismo 049There seems to be a big surge in vineyards in the Lompoc area.  Several small wineries have started up.

At the last minute our son found out that he could make the trip to L.A. where our grandson was bowling in the state championship.  So we tried to put a meeting place together, but there was no place that would take us, especially when I mentioned the kids were planning on setting up a tent to sleep in.  Finally got a camp site at Vandenberg AFB, which is up above Santa Barbara,  made Chuck very happy, as we would be coming through Los Anglos on a Sunday.  Actually it was fairly busy even then, hate to think what it would have been like during the week.  And our darn GPS took us through down town, on some very rough highway.  But the campground is prefect for us, the kids have a tent area right behind us.  There are two rec rooms, bathrooms, TV's.  This the first base where we had to unlock all our bays, open the hood, leave the truck and go sit in a waiting room, just to get on base.  Wondering if they were going to consider my kitchen knives as weapons. Was afraid the kids were going to have a body search once we tried to vouch them on.  But it went okay.

Yesterday we took them into Pismo Beach so our grandson could play in the waves.

pismo 062

The water was so cold that we laughed ourselves silly watching our son and DIL trying to get wet and not get wet and cold all at the same time.

pismo 150

Even our grandson didn’t stay in very long, although he did ride the waves for awhile on his boogey board.  Chuck and I did not venture down onto the sand, we stayed on the pier and took pictures.

pismo 148

We had plans to go for clam chowder at a small place called Splash.  They have the best, but there was also a line half way down the block so we nixed that and tried another place that we knew.

Today after a breakfast of fruit and pancakes, the kids went into town, and Chuck and I went to the commissary and got the making for clam chowder. How about that?  No waiting line, and it was darn good if I do say so myself.  They are leaving in the morning, and we are staying another night here, then moving on to Morro Bay for a week.  We have friends that we are meeting up with, and I just might see if I can play a round of golf.  One of my favorite courses over there, they call it the “poor man’s pebble beach”. How dumb are we, that we decided to go to the valley of California IN AUGUST?  Guess if it gets too bad we will head back to the coastNow as for here on the coast it is down right cool.  We are all wearing jackets, especially at night, sleeping weather is wonderful. That is one of the weird things about the weather here, the coast is almost always cool and in the summer can get down right cold.  But you don’t go to the Sacramento valley in a tin can in the summer!  The opposite of cold is HOT, and we lived there long enough that we should know better.  But salmon season opened and Chuck is dying to catch a few in the river.

Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of our lives, so lets try and make the most of it.  Travel safe.

I’m Late, I’m Late…………….

Saturday came and went, and my blog is still not up to date.  So much for my promise that I made to myself that it would be done every Saturday at the very least.  Well, there are plenty of forgotten resolutions in the corner to keep this one company.
Got the slide issue taken care of.  They did a major adjustment to the big slide, to even it up, and the hesitation it was doing when the slides were coming in was all due to a tired solenoid.  And the good news, the repair men came to us.  Nice not having to take our home into the shop.
We are going to the San Diego area for a week or so, leaving here Wednesday.  Be fun to get away.  Also want to check out the marine base there, checking out the space-a options.  Being as we are using that to fly to Hawaii in October.  We have about three options close by so checking each of the bases early.  For those not familiar with space-a, it basically is space available on any flight going where you headed.  The bad part is, nothing is guaranteed, which means you just might not get there.  There is a sign-up 60 days before you want to fly, so the chances do get better.  Well, we are up for an adventure, and looks like that will be what we will get.  We flew like that to Alaska when the kids were little, and it was interesting.  Coming back we were on a huge transport plane, with cargo strapped all down the middle.  But the pilots took the kids up front, and they “flew” the plane.  It was great.
Been sitting here looking out the window at the quail running around.  They are every where in the park.  So neat to watch, they run all over, hardly ever fly.  And the babies are wonderful.  So tiny and they are right there with the parents.  The female stays on the ground, but poppa perches up high to keep and eye out.  Another nice thing here, we have no mosquitos, and very few flies.  Of course the summer isn’t over yet, but so far so good.  Here comes a flock of quail again.  And yes, they do bring a smile to my face.
So that was easy, got it all on paper, ready to hit publish.  Awww, life is good.

And in closing......

SPOKE TOO SOON

Last week I was talking about the weather and how it was so wonderful, well, I spoke too soon.  The heat has found us.  Time to roll.  We are going next week into San Diego for a mini rally at an Elks with a few folks from here.  That will be nice as the temps tend to stay fairly consistent there, in the seventy’s.  Then we will pop back here for a few days and get things together for a slooow trip up the coast.  See a few friends, play some golf, just take our time.

On the road into Temecula, we our having some visual treats appear.  The iron works company has begun putting out some of the many horses along the road.  They are very eye catching, as they are life size.

horses 002

The picture below had electric poles that I thought were distracting, so photo shopped them out.  They also added the one horse that is on the other side.   The photo of the one above is on a tall hill, and can be seen from quite a distance.  Word has it that they will be displayed all the way into town.

horses 009-001

Been busy doing a whole lot of keeping busy doing nothing.  Can’t believe that we are so content, but have to admit looking forward to those wheels going round and round for awhile.  Will miss having the little car to drive, we don’t plan on taking it with us.  We decided that it would be best if we didn’t get our grandson when he comes down to bowl in L.A. we will plan something when we get up there.  Maybe take him and a friend camping or something.  He is 13, and the thought of him having to spend days entertaining us two old fogies', made us feel for him.  This is a case where two kids is better.

Been waiting on the RV mobile repair service to get back to us to install a new motor for our slides.  It has started to hesitate when the 3rd and 4th slide comes in, and gradually is getting worse so we decided to have it fixed before we ended up stuck some where.  Does not help that the big slide is the last to come in. This service does a lot of work in the park, and everyone we talked to seemed happy with them.  And he was “Johnnie on the spot” coming out, but no word, and no returns on our calls.  Hate not to have it fixed before we go to San Diego.  Got a week yet, so hopefully.  Only been since November, so it is like we could have called sooner, not the smartest thing  we have not done.

Hopefully next time will have more to write about.  Life is Good.

The Value In A Glass Of Wine

A glass of wine

To my friends who enjoy a glass of wine, and to those who don't and are always seen with a bottle of water in their hand.
As Ben Franklin said:

In wine there is wisdom,
In beer there is freedom,
In water there is bacteria.
In a number of carefully controlled trials, scientists have demonstrated that if we drink one liter of water each day, at the end of the year we would have absorbed more than one kilo of Escherichia coli (E. Coli) - bacteria found in feces.
In other words, we are consuming one kilo of poop.
However, we do NOT run that risk when drinking wine & beer (or tequila, rum, whiskey or other liquor) because alcohol has to go through a purification process of boiling, filtering and/or fermenting.
Remember:
Water = Poop
Wine = Health

There is no need to thank me for this valuable information: I'm doing it as a public service

Therefore, it is better to drink wine and talk stupid, than to drink water and be full of sh*t.

LOVING THIS WEATHER

Everyone has told us that the weather does get hot here, (Temecula, CA) but so far we are loving it.  Yes, the afternoons tend to get on the warm side, especially inside, but turn the air on for a few hours or head to the pool.  And the club house and all the rooms are kept pretty much on the icy side.  We have been busy, but never seem to get done, always more of this hard life to tackle the next day.
We went out with a bunch the other night to support one of our own who was playing at the opening of a new restaurant.  Had to bring our own wine as they had yet to get there license.  And yes, some of us drank a bit too much, and the next morning water aerobics went by the way side, although later in the day I did go up and spend some time toughing it out.  Guess that tells you one of who indulged too much.  Yesterday I sort of tricked Chuck into going to see Magic Mike.  For those who don’t know, it is about male strippers.  Back in the day I’ve been to a few shows, but none like these,  whoooo!  Of course the language was so bad, can not believe that it has to be that way.  Okay, enough.
Chuck and I both had doctors appointments today, just checking in, Chuck has been getting nose bleeds every once in a while, so he is going to see an ENT to have it checked out.  Other wise all seems to be well.
If we had not already booked our Hawaii trip, I think we might seriously be heading back for the Escapees rally, but we have, so that settles it.  Next year we are thinking of doing a grand tour, from California to Canada, over to Maine, then weave our way back, but it is still in the thinking stage, not even to planning yet.
For years living in northern California we caught salmon quite a bit in the river.  I would smoke up huge batches using an old grill, with just a tiny wood fire in it.  Delicious.  Chuck now has this electric smoker, so we bought some salmon and marinated it just like we used to.  This turned out so bad, don’t think it is even eatable.  Bummer.
Well that is a week in our life, the good the bad and the …..well, it was all good.  Have a great week!

FUN WEEK

Wow, this week flew by, and a great time we had.  So glad that Barb & Bob stopped by for a visit, hoping to get in some down time.  And to be fair we did let them put their feet up and catch their breath.  The weather was great with the exception of the day we went to the beach..Murphy’s Law kicked in.  The coastal fog did not totally burn off, but we had a nice lunch over looking the ocean.

lawn mowers races 001

We took in the “lawn mower” races one day.  Not exactly what we expected, but we did have some good laughs.  Imagine Tim Allen on steroids. Jenny, if you are reading this, you & Don are signed up for next Saturday.

lawn mower races 028

We also had a few other friends in one night for Mexican.  Lots of food, fun and laughs.  Most of the people are gone, but there are enough left to have a good time.  Our neighbors have put their site in the rental pool, so Bob & Barb were able to park next to us.  Made it nice.  We took a tour of the wine country, but being as I was the only one who indulges, we only toured.  Some beautiful scenery, it is also horse country.  Great combination.  Barb and I took off one day, did a little shopping, lunch and got our hair cut.  Left the guys alone and Bob was visiting Chuck, when Chuck just fell asleep on him!  Nothing stands between Chuck and his nap.  We did get in a few games of hand and foot.  One night we went to the club house and played the real one, girls lost, then our own special skipbo, girls lost really, really bad.  Tried Mexican train, but never finished that one.

Our SIL would love some of these.

Our pool deck finally got finished and we were able to enjoy a few afternoons bobbing around.  Sure felt good to have it back.  I’ve been going to aerobics, which means up early.  Well at least by 8.  Have not been a morning person for a long time, and it is amazing how much gets done before noon.

lawn mower races 018

Before we knew it, they were hooked up and moving down the road.

Last night was Yippee, the pool is open party.  Had quite a large group, lots of food, live music, great time.  Don’t think there is ever an Escapees event where there is a food shortage.

Till next week, Laugh, Love, Live, it is the first day of the rest of our lives.

COMPANY COMING ROUND THE BEND

Our good friends, Bob & Barb Williams, “aka Bob/Chuck”, are due in tomorrow.  Really looking forward to seeing them again.  We last crossed paths when Bob was working at Amazon in Coffeeville.

We have had a busy week  doing the same thing, but doing it differently.  Tuesday is golfing day for Chuck, so I try to plan running into town and doing my thing.  We also planned to go to dinner at a restaurant that runs a special on Tuesday just for our park.  Course we have to go  by 4:30, and they like to have a minimum of 12, but the price is right, wine is good and the food is great too.  Friday we meet some friends for lunch and we moved on to their house for more chat time.  We are all hoping to manage to get together for Mexican here later in the week.  Margarita’s ……oh yes!

They are still working on the pool deck, everyone is getting antsy.  And because of all the dust they caused, the pool will have to be drained and refilled.  The deck is looking really good, and it is supposed to last for years. We also have a large group of workers cutting a fire break around most of the park…..more dust, but well worth it.  Been a dry year here, every little bit helps  if a fire happens any where near.

Played bridge tonight for a few hours, there are still enough of us here to get a game together, think it will hold the rest of the summer.  Not sure when we are leaving to go north, but probably around the middle of July.  Our grandson will be coming down to the Los Anglos area for the state bowling tournament, and as the Jell-O plans now stand, he will be with us for awhile as we make our way north taking him home.  Only time will tell, we will see.

Enjoy, love, laugh.

EXERCISE FOR PEOPLE OVER 60

1. Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side.

2. With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax.

3. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags.

4. Then try 50-lb potato bags and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level)

5. After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.

WHAT HAPPENED TO SATURDAY?

Or for that matter last week.  Considering that we are not in travel mode, the time just seems to fly by and we are enjoying our selves immensely.  No hitch itch, no wanderlust, just contented to take advantage of down time.

Will admit to having a on going bridge group here and we still  have enough people to get two tables most of the time, and we have been playing most every day or evening.

Today we took a run to a fruit market out side of Temecula, that we have found, to stock up for the coming week.  Stopped and had lunch at an Irish pub, and it was excellent.  Will be a place that we will return to. We have not been eating out like we used too, mostly because of the drive, and the food is better at home….well, most of the time.  Chuck tried out his smoker last week, with ribs and chicken.  Wow, they were so good!  The ribs were the best, just slow cooked them and they were fall off the bone tender.  When we were in Colorado Springs last fall, our son sent us some smoked salmon that he had done.  Well, we forgot to share it with the kids there, so saved a package for when they came here.  Sorry, forgot it again.  Made a smoked salmon spread and took it to happy hour Friday.  Lots of compliments, I’d say it turned out good.

Weather has been as near perfect as it can be.  Few hours in the early after noon when it is on the warm side, but cools off early and fast.  Our pool area is still under renovation, hopefully they will be finished by this week.  They have a women foreman running the job, and they seem to be going at it full force.

That’s all folks, travel safe, stop and smell the roses.

FIRST THE ZOO, THEN ON TO LEGOLAND

Our daughter and SIL arrived in the early afternoon on Monday.  Long hard drive coming from Colorado Springs, but they did take their time and a short side trip to the Grand Canyon.  Coming across the dessert the temperature went to 113.  Scary, with the two little ones in the car, in case of trouble.  Nice evening, everyone got rested and the next day it was off to the …..

SD

We took two cars, and were off early so we arrived when it opened.  There were quite a few school buses, as school is still in session in California, and they were having field trips.  But it was not really crowded, and it was a great day.

legoland 018

The highlight for me was the baby hippo riding on his momma’s back.  Actually they were just sitting there, but made great pictures.  And the kids loved it.

Unfortunately our daughter had picked up a bug that seemed to get worse as the day progressed, but refused to leave.  Said she would die before she disappointed the kids who have been looking forward to this for almost a year.  We did managed to see it all and got back home safe and sound.  She hit the bed and kids were still ready for a little pool time.

Roinn enjoyed the water, but Kylee is still a “sitting on the step, makes me a happy girl”.  The next day we rested up, gave Chuck’s new smoker a try out.  Make some fantastic baby backs.  They were sooooo good, fallen off the bone good.

Then it was LEGOLAND, here we come.  Roinn has been a Lego lover for years, and he is so into them.  It was amazing to watch his eyes light up no matter where he was looking.  Surprised us that we enjoyed seeing all the construction of the Legos. Figures and towns, Landmarks, all made of the little plastic pieces.

Great place for the younger kids, and thankfully not too crowded.

The people are real, the rides are fun, but the food and drinks are way too expensive! Hamburger…9 dollars!  We had snacks in our backpacks, and managed on those.

This Memorial was almost life size.  Awesome.

Kylee is a girly girl, but a real dare devil and loves the roller coasters.  She could have  gone all day, lucky she was just big enough for all of them, as long as an adult was with her.

They saved the waterpark for the second day, and unfortunately the weather was down right chilly.  Didn’t stop them though, the air might have been cool, but the water was heated, AND they had the whole place to themselves.  They took extra clothes and there is a family dryer that will blow you dry once your done.  Chuck and I passed on going the last day.  The old folks wear out fast.  It was a great visit, know the great grand babies enjoyed them selves to no end, which means we all enjoyed it.

Till next week, travel safe, enjoy each day.
